Remains of the Jomon Period in various scales were discovered in “Minamikayabe” of Hakodate City. Hakodate Jomon Culture Center is a main facility of the Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Rest Areas), “Jomon Roman Minamikayabe”, and there earthenware and stoneware discovered nearby are exhibited, enabling the visitors to understand the people’s mysterious and sturdy ways of living in Jomon times. Among them, Hokkaido’s one and only national treasure and the largest one in Japan, the Hollow Clay Figurine (Chuku-Dogu) indicates the Jomon people’s highly artistic nature.
Moreover, the center offers seven hands-on experience activities without the need for advance booking, including “miniature earthenware making”. The activity only takes about one hour and it is a good opportunity to actually experience a little bit of Jomon life instead of just looking at the exhibits.
