Banei Horse Racing is horse racing that is found only in Obihiro (and no where else in the world), where horses weighing more than a ton compete on power and speed by pulling weighted iron sleds. This is a tradition that was passed on to the present which was enjoyed as a leisure activity of farmers back in the era when Hokkaido was still being developed. The giant horses punching through the sand as they pull the iron sleds continue to captivate the hearts of people watching just like long ago. Within the race track grounds are corners where visitors can ride horses and interact with cute animals, as well as Tokachi Mura, where visitors can enjoy food which uses local Tokachi food ingredients, making for a facility that is sufficiently entertaining even if you don’t buy any betting tickets.
Banei Horse Racing is held mainly on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, with night races also held during the months of April-November.
