Sea urchins from Rishiri is exceptionally delicious as they grow by eating “Rishiri-konbu (Laminaria ochotensis)” which is famous as luxury foodstuff as well as the best ingredient for making excellent soup stock. The characteristics of Rishiri sea urchins are its sweetness and melt-in-the-mouth texture. The sea urchins come into season in summer and they taste best around June – September.
Additionally, on Rishiri Island, visitors can enjoy the experience of picking sea urchins, cracking them open and eating them off from their shells in the same way as local fishermen do.
