Lake Kutcharo is connected with Onuma (a large marsh) and Konuma (a small marsh) and the two marshes are also connected with a narrow waterway. As the lake lies on a low ground level, sea water flows into it at the time of high tide.
Lake Kutcharo is also a stopover for waterfowl that migrate between Japan and Siberia. Visitors can enjoy watching wild birds that come to the lake from the Waterfowl Observation Center standing on the southern side of Onuma. In spring and autumn, several thousands of migrating whistling swans can be seen. In winter, natural monuments such as Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles can be sighted. Moreover, “Kosui Matsuri (Lake Festival)” is held in summer, offering great entertainment of fireworks display above the lake.
