Bibai City once prospered as a major coal-mining city in Hokkaido and “ARTE PIAZZA BIBAI” is a museum opened in Bibai City by reusing an old school closed as a result of the coal mine being closed.
At ARTE PIAZZA BIBAI, Kan Yasuda, a sculptor from Bibai City who made his success in Italy and other parts of the world, exhibits around 40 of his sculptures on the school premises of approximately 70,000 square meters, with the timber school building in the middle. Cherry blossoms of spring, fresh greens of summer, leaves of autumn, snow of winter… each of his artwork pieces blends in with the surrounding nature, creating a beautiful setting with each season. His artwork continues to be created to this day. (In winter, snowshoes can be borrowed for walking around the site in snow.)
