A geopark is a program first introduced in Europe for the preservation and utilization of geological resources and such. “World Geoparks” is regarded as one of UNESCO’s official programs, aiming to utilize them not only for educational purposes but also for the revitalization of local areas, making them new tourist attractions.
Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Geopark is Japan’s first geopark to be designated as a “global geopark”. It has many attractions, including magnificent and beautiful nature formed as a result of volcanic activities and highly valuable geological features. Visitors can learn about “the history of humans living with the changing earth”, through visiting the visitor center and a walk along the footpath.
