Once rising to the summit of its prosperity through the Pacific-herring fishing in spring, in the town of Esashi, a large number of historical buildings, including wholesale stores, warehouses and temples remain. Currently, the cluster of these historic buildings is renovated into a streetscape called Inishie Kaido (Inishie Highway), delighting its visitors. At one of the former wholesale stores, “Yokoyama Family”, visitors can enjoy tasting authentic “nishin soba” (buckwheat noodles with herring) while thinking of the old times when the town was enjoying its most prosperous moments with herring fishing. Also held in August of every year is Hokkaido’s oldest festival, the “Ubagami Grand Shrine Togyo Festival” which is a festival to express gratitude to the Gods for a good catch of herring and large numbers of tourists visit the town to see 13 impressive floats parading down the streets.
