Gokyokaku, a well-known fort for its star-shape outlines. Despite the fact that it became the battleground of the Battle of Hakodate in the 19th century, it is now a historic park with lush foliage, attracting many tourists. Cherry blossoms in spring, deep green in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and illuminated snow gently glowing in winter colorfully enhance the five-pointed star. The sight of Goryokaku Fort at ground level is beautiful but to fully enjoy the view of the five-pointed star shape decorated in seasonal colors of nature, it is recommended to visit the observatory of the Goryokaku Tower at 90 m above ground. Also in the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office restored within Goryokaku Fort, visitors can learn about the history of Gokyokaku. Moreover, several events related to the history of Goryokaku are held, including Hakodate Goryokaku Festival in May and Citizen’s Open-Air Theater in July.
