Ryugudai Observatory/Ice Boom

An observation where visitors can get the feel of drift ice

Experiences, Sights, Winter

The Ryugudai Observatory is a viewing spot from which you can see the drift ice close up. There, you’ll be able to see all the way to the mountains of the Shiretoko Peninsula. What’s more, visitors can also directly touch the drift ice.

Visitors can also see the worlds first “ice boom” installed nearby which serves to prevent the destruction of aquafarming facilities for mussels and scallops caused by the penetration of drift ice into Lake Saroma.
