Drift Ice (Rausu Town)

Rausu drift ice where nationally treasured eagles gather

Experiences, Sights, Winter

As the drift ice flows into the Nemuro Strait from the Sea of Okhotsk, Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles fly in from above in search of food. Eagles make it through the winter by eating fish they pull out from drift ice openings. Rausu, a place where the landscape feature the gathering of large eagles, is a popular bird watching spot.

Riding a tourism cruise from Rausu Port means that you’ll be able to observe before your very own eyes, the Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles flying above the drift ice.
